Using Your Own Materials and Colors

Updated by Francine Dupont

If you need an injection mold made with special materials that we don’t normally inventory, we can often mold it using materials that you supply. Read on to see how it works. If you have any questions along the way, our customer service representatives are happy to assist.

How It Works

1. Request Material Setup

  1. Sign in to Protolabs (or sign up if you don't have an account).
  2. From your User Profile, navigate to the Customer-Supplied Material page and click Set Up a New Material.

    Request Material Setup
  3. Complete and submit the online form with your material information.

    Submit CSM Form
  4. We will review your request and quickly follow up with you. If we are able to use your material, we will begin setting up your material in our system and provide you with a material ID number.

2. Upload and Configure Your Parts

Read our Getting Started article to see how to upload and configure your parts. Once your material's information is set up in our system, you'll be able to select it when you configure your parts. If you configure your parts before then, you can simply select one of the "I will supply my own..." options.

Submit CSM Form

3. Order Your Parts

After you place your order, we'll follow-up with you to let you know how much material we need, and how and where to ship it.

4. Ship Your Materials

Ship your material using the instructions we provide. When we receive your material, we'll inventory it and manufacture and ship your parts.

5. Receive Your Parts!

Note: A request to set up your materials only needs to be completed when you want to set up a new material or when you want to replenish your material stock.
